IVAN WAYNE MAULT
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ivan Wayne Mault.
Wayne passed away unexpectedly on September 10, 2023 at the age of 76 years.
He was predeceased by his sisters Marlyn Mault in infancy and Lynne Wilding in
February 2023.
Wayne is survived by his wife Cheryl, sons Kelly and Todd and wife Cathy, his
grandchildren Mackenzie, Liham, Kahnor and Lachlan. He also leaves behind his
sister Myrna Turko and husband Ken, along with his nieces and nephews Kim and
husband Danny, Robert, Trevor and wife Karen, Patrick and wife Carole, Michael and
wife Melanie and Anna and husband Geoff, as well as many more great nieces and great nephews.
Ivan Wayne Mault was born on February 27, 1947, in Swan River, Manitoba to Ivan John Patrick Mault and
Mary Mault. With older sister, Lynne, and younger sister, Myrna, the family was complete. After a quick stop
in Dauphin Manitoba, the family moved to Portage La Prairie where he graduated from Portage Collegiate
Institute. Moving to Winnipeg and living in residence at the University of Manitoba, he met Cheryl Samels.
Upon graduating as a Mechanical Engineer in 1970, he moved to Churchill to work at Churchill Forest
Industries. After moving back to Winnipeg, he and Cheryl got married in 1971. He then started working for the
Department of Labour for the Provincial Government inspecting boilers, elevators, amusement park rides, gas,
electrical and propane. This allowed him to join the National Board where he and Cheryl got to visit most of
Canada and the United States for board meetings. After having his sons, Kelly and Todd, he became the
Director of Labour for the Manitoba Government where he worked until he retired in 2005.
As his children grew, he began volunteering at Glenlee Community Club as Cub Scout leader, coach for hockey
and baseball, secretary, treasurer and eventually, President and Chair of the Board. Wayne was also very active
at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian church joining the choir and always helping out with readings and other events the
church put on. With Kelly and Todd now playing football, Wayne began coaching at Norberry Community
Center and became a member of the board for the St. Vital Mustangs. His volunteering did not stop there. He
started helping out at the Scottish Pavilion for Folklorama, as he loved his heritage, and eventually became the
Chair of the Board.
With his love of singing and performing, he and the friends he made at St. Andrew’s, began a performing group
called the Kenwood Players. Putting on performances for friends and family with skits and songs, soon led to
caroling, birthdays and retirements. The group liked raising monies for charity if payments were given. His
sheer enjoyment in this group was seen as he regularly donned a grass skirt and coconut shells as they performed
Honey Bun and when he removed his shirt as the men dressed as Chippendales to perform for a lucky lady.
These moments truly brought joy into his life.
He and Cheryl liked to spend their summers at their cabin at Delta Beach, and there were always friends and
family around to help with work or to just relax on the beach. Many an evening would go early into the
morning playing board and card games, with some continuing the next morning, to see who won the rubber
match. Great fun and laughter could always be heard coming from the cabin. It was their paradise and they
loved it.
Once grandchildren began arriving, ‘Grumpa’ had a new love. Mackenzie, Liham, Kahnor and Lachlan made
him young again and he spent as much time with them as possible. Telling jokes, reading, playing and going on
adventures was his new passion. You could see his face light up every time he saw them. Once they began
school and sports, he would often be seen in the crowd cheering and encouraging them. He was so proud of
whatever they did.
Wayne Mault was an amazing man who cared not only for his friends, family and community but was willing to
help out wherever and whoever he could. His love, spirit and sense of humor lives on within his family. The
world lost a great man recently, but we know he is looking down on us, still cheering and guiding us to become
great. He will be missed forever.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main
Street, Wpg, MB, with Rev. Matthew Brough presiding.
