EDWARD JOHN COURT

April 16, 1931 - July 26, 2023

On July 26, Ed passed away peacefully with his daughter Audrey and granddaughter Alanna by his side.

Ed is survived by his children, Jim (Gwen), Audrey (Barry), Peter (Carmen), daughter-in-law Karen; grandchildren, Christine (Thor), Carolyn, Lorraine (Ian), Lucas (Nicole), Alanna (Brad), Devan, Jamie, Jessica (Mac), and ten great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Jane and son Alan.

Ed was born in Winnipeg, growing up in Elmwood. After meeting and marrying Jane, they moved to St. James, Charleswood, and then Headingley.

Upon completing high school, Ed attended the University of Manitoba where he graduated as a Chartered Accountant. After working for Canada Revenue for a few years, he opened his own practice. He also worked at Assiniboia Downs where he became the mutual manager. He had many fond memories of working at the racetrack, including being introduced to the Queen at the Manitoba Derby in 1970. In 1980 his son Jim joined him in the practice, and they continued to work together until his retirement in 2003.

Outside of work, Ed and Jane were both active members at the St. James United Church, where he volunteered with the youth sports program and Boy Scouts. Ed enjoyed putting on variety nights, highlighting many talents within the church. Ed and Jane were avid bridge players, but Ed also enjoyed playing other card games. Cribbage was his favourite game and he taught many of his grandchildren to play, just as his dad had taught him. We knew he had to clean his glasses when he lost.

Ed and Jane were always available to attend the various activities that the family participated in, including sporting events, dance competitions, recitals/concerts, and more. This is how they became involved with volunteering at the Pavilion of Scotland for Folklorama. Ed enjoyed his position of selling drink tickets for many years. He was extremely proud to be named an ambassador for the pavilion in 2002, and then Ambassador General for Folklorama in 2003. He often shared that he not only attended all of the Pavilions for the festival in 1970, but again in 2003.

Ed enjoyed traveling, and always dreamed of new trips to take. He went on many trips with family including to Hawaii, Scotland, and Mexico. A bus trip through Europe, cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean, as well as many road trips. The family will miss his stories and how they kept getting better with age as he re-told them. Ed had a creative mind and we cherish the years we had with him.

Please join the family to celebrate Ed on Saturday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m., at Headingley United Church (110 Bridge Road).
