ETHEL BLUES 1919-2017 Peacefully on December 11, 2017 Ethel Blues passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 98. She was predeceased by her parents and the love of her life Johnny. She is survived by her only child, Wendy (Colin), and was Granny to grandchildren John, Zachary and Tia Nicolson. She also leaves to mourn her sister May Murray of Arbroath, niece France Sibley (Bill) and great-nieces Jill and Dawn, as well as Johnny's brother George of Forres, Scotland and his family. Ethel was born in Arbroath, Scotland on October 2, 1919 and it was there that she met and married the love of her life John Blues on March 18, 1948. Together they immigrated to Winnipeg in 1953 where they started their family and became very active in the Scottish community. She was a curler for many years, a founding member of the Pavilion of Scotland, and was a staunch supporter of Wendy in her activities, such as Highland Dancing and the Heather Belle Ladies Pipe Band, and later her grandchildren's many sports and musical endeavors. She and Johnny spent many summers at the trailer at Lake Seven and loved to travel to places such as California, Arizona, Florida, Texas and especially to Hawaii with friends. She was also grateful to able to travel back to Scotland one final time 2 years ago with Wendy, Colin and Tia, to celebrate her sister's 90th Birthday. Many a child that was born to friends and family received a baby blanket lovingly crocheted by her, and many were fortunate to receive samples of her delicious cinnamon loaf and Scottish "tablet" (fudge). She loved to follow golf, curling and tennis on TV, especially her favorites Tom Watson and Andy Murray. Ethel was a remarkable woman who was loved by everyone who met her. She remained active and vibrant, living alone and independently right up to her passing. She got her hair done and went shopping for the best deals on rye bread, Turtles and Vitalux every Saturday including the day before she was admitted to hospital. We would like to send a huge thank you to the staff of the ambulance, the St Boniface Emergency Department, as well as the staff on Unit 5B for their excellent and compassionate care of our Mom/Granny. A come and go celebration of Ethel's life will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2018 in the common room of Niakwa Tower, 115 Niakwa Road, from 1-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
