RICHARD S. L. (LES) LOBBAN November 16, 1921 - March 26, 2001 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard "Les" Lobban, 79 years, on Monday, March 26, 2001, at the Health Sciences Centre. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Alma; son Rick (Susan) and grandchildren, Danielle, Erin, Richard, and Caitlin; as well as many nieces, nephews and relatives in Canada and the United Kingdom. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Kate; and his four older brothers and sisters. Born and raised in Montrose, Scotland, Les joined the Royal Air Force in 1939, and served during the Battle of Britain, and in the Far East throughout the Second World War. He returned to civilian life at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in England before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954. He served throughout Canada, Europe and the United States until his retirement in 1972. A skilled "first aider", Les won numerous first aid competitions while in the military, including the Mary Otter Military First Aid Trophy. He established a division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in North Bay, ON. It was his practical knowledge and teaching skill in First Aid that brought him to Winnipeg where he embarked on a second career with St. John Ambulance until his retirement 12 years ago. He was a Commander in the Order of St. John. Active in the community, Les was a former scout leader, and member of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Always true to his Scottish ancestry, one of his greatest enjoyments was his active role at the Pavilion of Scotland during many Folklorama celebrations. Funeral service will take place on Friday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church, 195 Collegiate St., with Canon John Caird officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave. We extend our deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of the MICU and IICU at the Health Sciences Centre for their kindness and excellent care. In keeping with his love of animals, we gratefully request donations in Less memory to be made to the Humane Society, 5 Kent Rd., Winnipeg. MB R2L 1X3.
