JOHN MADDEN Peacefully on October 14, 2011, John Madden passed away at St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 64 years. He was predeceased by his parents Murray Gordon Madden and Dora Ingram Madden. He is survived by his maternal uncle Gordon Milne (Catherine), cousins Andy Milne and Carol Wilcox. John was born on February 9, 1947, and was raised in Ottawa and Winnipeg. He attended the University of Manitoba and worked there following graduation. John was heavily involved in Folk Music, especially British and Irish Traditional. He belonged to Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, and was a fine musician who played multiple instruments. The bands he played in were Borealis, and also The Flying Haggis Band which was featured yearly at the Scottish Pavilion during Folklorama. He sang in the Bison Men's Chorus and the Irish Myst Choir; both of which he enjoyed very much. As well, he had a wide repertoire of songs, and frequently entertained his friends with the more dubious and politically incorrect ones. John was a perennial volunteer at the Folk Festival and The West End Culture Centre. His knowledge of Folk Music was vast. In addition, he belonged to The Burns Club, and briefly acted in The Fringe Festival. John was an active member of the Irish Association of Manitoba. He served on the board of directors for many years, as well as supporting and participating in many club events. Many thanks to John's friends who visited and supported him during his illness. A special thanks to Hugh Cummins, Irene Puloski, Margaret Menzies and Audrey Robertson, and the caring nurses in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the St. Boniface Hospital. John was a gentle soul loved by everyone he met Slan Lat. A Celebration of Life will take place on October 28, 2011 at The Irish Association of Manitoba, 654 Erin Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba at 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
