DR. MARGARET JOYCE GREWAR 1921 - 2007 It is with great sadness that the family of Joyce Grewar announces her peaceful passing on Saturday, June 23, 2007. Left to cherish the memories of this grand and gracious lady are her husband Dr. David Grewar, and eight children: daughters, Susan Moore, Fiona (Frank) Cantafio, Katrina (Bruce) Montgomery; sons, Colin (Lisa), Neil (Anne), Bruce (Cheryl), Rory (Herb Neufeld), and Peter (Lisa) Grewar. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Nigel, Jill, Miles, Leanne, Dean, Amy, Carla, Shona, Chelsey, Emma, Paul, Tory and Ben. Joyce was born in Swansea, Wales on February 2, 1921. She was raised in London, England and obtained her medical degree from St. Andrews University in Scotland. It was at St. Andrews that she met and married David. Joyce practised medicine in London before immigrating to Canada in 1955. She joined her husband and settled in Winnipeg with their three young daughters. The family grew to eight children with the births of five sons. Joyce devoted the next 20 years to raising her children. Joyce returned to the medical field in 1974 at age 54 and worked in psychiatry at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre until her retirement, at age 73, in 1994. Being an only child, Joyce determined that her children would never feel alone. She dedicated her life to the creation of a happy, healthy, and supportive home where her children would always find security and encouragement. Family meant everything to Joyce and she was happiest when her family was together at Sunday dinner or late night tea laughing, singing, or debating the issues of the day. Joyce's other great passion was music. Gifted with a soft and gentle voice she sang in many church choirs and attended countless live performances of music, theatre, and dance. One of her particular joys was spending a summer evening at Rainbow Stage. Though born Welsh, Joyce loved all things Scottish and was a fixture and tireless volunteer at Folklorama's Scottish Pavilion for many years. She also served as a loyal member of the Caledonian Women's Club and the Women's Committee of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Joyce will be most vividly remembered by those who spent time at May Cottage, a quaint English style summer cottage at Lac du Bonnet which she lovingly maintained for over 50 years. It was here that she most reveled in the closeness of her family and where she established many wonderful traditions that will live on for generations. A celebration of Joyce Grewar's life will be held on Saturday, June 30 at 11:00 am. in St. Andrews River Heights United Church, 255 Oak St. at Kingsway. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the many devoted caregivers at the Pembina Centre who cared for Dr. Joyce in her final years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Arthritis Society, Manitoba Division, Suite 105 - 386 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3R6.
